Dr Disco, Heats Up AQU Winter Weekend Action

Courtesy of NYTB
by Sarah Mace

New York-breds Dr Disco, Head Heart Hoof and Lots of Stones warmed things up at a chilly Aqueduct this past weekend delivering three different kinds of sizzling performances over the inner oval, including a course record-setting run and the extension of five-race winning streak.

In the third race on Aqueduct’s Saturday card, Joe DiRico’s newly-turned three-year-old homebred Dr Disco, by DiRico’s New York stallion Disco Rico (Keane Stud), showed the promise of very good things to come when he ran away with a first-level state-bred allowance race in his third career start for trainer Bruce Brown.

In his debut on November 26, Dr Disco ran second to electrifying maiden winner Read the Contract (Read the Footnotes), going six furlongs in a restricted MSW race over the Aqueduct main track and earning an 83 Beyer Speed Figure. Next time out, on December 18, Dr Disco graduated handily, much the best in a field of nine state-bred juveniles going 5 ½ furlongs over the inner surface and earning a comparable Figure of 84.

Supported heavily for his three-year-old debut on Saturday, Dr Disco did not disappoint. Outdueling second choice Capitol Hook early on in the six-furlong contest, the chestnut colt opened up on the competition before powering down to finish first by 4 ¾ lengths in 1:10.51. David Cohen has been aboard for all three starts.

Trainer Bruce Brown is pleased with his colt’s progress. “He’s really moved forward with every start,” Brown said. “He’s still a little green but he’s developing very nicely.” Brown also reported that he’s “A piece of cake” to train in the morning. Since Dr Disco long-bodied frame still has some filling out to do, Brown plans to carry on steadily with the colt’s training as he grows and matures, picking appropriate spots and focusing on a spring and summer campaign.

Dr Disco has three accomplished siblings. Full sister four-time stakes-winner Dance Gal Dance, retired with six wins in nine career starts, never finished out of the exacta and earned $273,070.  Stakes-placed full brother Dr Rico has earned $197,323 and half sister Judge Margaret bankrolled $142,208. Their dam Dr Margaret is a multiple stakes-winner by Dr. Blum, who was also bred and campaigned by the DiRico family. Dr. Disco was foaled at Keane Stud where his sire stands.

In the TDN of 2/6/08, Bill Oppenheim suggested that thoroughbred breeders might actually attempt to breed a race horse instead of trying to hit a home run at the sales. Based on the statistics of his APEX system he chose 54 stallions who rose to the top as sires of money making horses at the track. DISCO RICO was one of only two NY stallions mentioned.

He has this to say about Disco Rico:

"Disco Rico (1.64) is a total APEX find, meaning I'd never heard of him until these numbers came up. He's
moved from Maryland to New York this year, but he has an all-Maryland pedigree, being by the Maryland sire Citidancer (Dixieland Band) out of an Apalachee mare who was stakes-placed in Maryland. His second
dam was the classy Maryland mare Capp It Off, and his third dam won 20 races and produced two other Maryland stakes winners. He had nine ABC runners last year, when his first crop were four-year-olds."
